National Coding Week 2023 at Oakgrove IPSN

26th Sep 2023

Congratulations to everyone at Oakgrove for participating in National Coding Week 2023.  Each class completed different coding activities during the week and we were able to share our successes in an Assembly today.  We showed a detailed Powerpoint of all the activities, games, animations and challenges.  We also showed a short video of the highlights from the week, which is shared below.

We talked about how coding is essential for our day to day lives.  It is in the apps we use.  It lets us buy things in the shops.  It lets us watch videos, play games and listen to music.  We can’t always see the code, but it is there in the background working very hard.

Primary 1 learned to code practically by following instructions and repeating instructions.  It looked great fun.  They also used games on the iPad including BeeBot.

Primary 2 learned to code too.  They were working on drag and drop activities and directions.  They were very successful.

Primary 3 learned to code using grids and directions.  They were able to code to help Scrat find the acorn as part of a game.  They were wonderful.

Primary 4 used the Angry Birds game and pathways to code.  They really focused on repeated instruction and loops.  When they pressed run they got to see if their code worked.

Primary 5 were really talented and created sports games.  They were able to customise their own court and ball and the speed at which things could move.  When they had designed the game, they got to play it.

Primary 6 were able to create a Flappy Birds game.  They had to design the character and background and the speed and gravity in the game.  Some people made the gameplay easy and some people made it really tricky.

Primary 7 made a controllable game/animation which used the repeat function and sounds.   It allowed them to be creative with their coding.

Thank you to all the support staff, teachers and children for their enthusiasm.  You all did so well.  You should be really proud of yourselves and all your coding.

All classes will revisit coding during the year too to make games and animations as part of the UICT curriculum.
