Singing for All - Unison in Harmony Project
Don't say 'I can't' Step up and be part of the City’s Music Promise
Two brand new community choirs have been announced in Derry-Londonderry, as part of the UK City of Culture's ongoing feast of music, dance, theatre and art. The ambitious Unison in Harmony project will establish one choir on the city's Waterside, with another branch across the Foyle at the Playhouse Theatre; following a guided programme of classes and rehearsals, the two strands will become one for a series of high-profile live performances around the city later in the year, as part of the Music Promise.
Project leader Valerie Whitworth this week issued an open invitation to everyone over the age of 12 to become involved. 'We want your voices, and we don't mind what, gender, background or singing experience you have. This is community singing- it is relaxed, welcoming, open to all, it's fun and it's free!'
Valerie is an experienced choir leader, with branches of her own 'Together One Voice' choirs in Omagh, Enniskillen, Manorhamilton and the city's Playhouse. She teaches the Natural Voice method, with the simple philosophy 'if you can speak you can sing.' 'Even in a culture with such a rich vocal tradition,' she says, 'so many people will automatically say to me "But I can't sing". It's something that is ingrained from a young age. Signing is our birthright, so come and join the fun.'
Membership of the new choirs and all classes are free, thanks to the support of the 'Music Promise' initiative. This is the musical education element of the City of Culture programme, giving the city's young people a range of opportunities to sing and perform in schools, communities and live venues throughout the year.
