Digital Schoolhouse at St Mary's College
Primary 4 have completed there Digital Schoolhouse day training at St Mary's College within this past month. The Digital Schoolhouse has been funded and designed by PlayStation, UKIE, Ubisoft and SEGA. St Mary's is one of only five digital hubs in Northern Ireland to provide such expertise and it is the only hub in the North-west. Oakgrove IPSN were the first school to attend the Digital Schoolhouse, so it was very exciting!
The children used play-based learning to engage in the Computing curriculum, specifically coding. The training was based around computational thinking and problem-solving methods that involve expressing problems and their solutions clearly.
The children completed practical activities, to experience sequences. They then recorded these practical activities on paper. Later in the day, they went on to use Scratch to program a character to move and dance. It was a wonderful day. Thank you Mrs Rice and her team for a great experience.
Primary 5 and Primary 6 will be participating in the Digital Schoolhouse later in the year. Primary 7 will receive coding training through a the Foyle Film Festival Education Programme, delivered by the Nerve Centre. A small group of Primary 7 children are working with Elliot Murphy, a past pupil, to program in Small Basic.
